Carl, this covering of the soil: are these dyed wood chips? I saw this over here for the first time last autumn. If yes, I am just wondering if they do use non-toxic dye - probably not as this needs to be cheap.
Markus, I'm sure it's dye. The color is far to ghastly to be natural. Tina goes on "garden tours" when possible to gather material for her paintings, and she says she first encountered the stuff a few years ago at a house that didn't seem to "belong" on the tour at all. Now it's everywhere at garden centers and Home Depot outlets.
