Back Roads, 5/31/12

Clearview, Oklahoma

From Tulsa I wanted to get to Chickasha, OK. Only about 175 miles away, I decided to avoid the Interstates and so picked a destination to program into the GPS that would take me on a loop south and east of the main highways. Before long this led to traveling on some unpaved roads and to this intersection.

Not much town was visible, but a sign welcomes a visitor to Clearview, "One of Oklahoma's Original Black Towns." More than fifty of these were founded around the beginning of the 20th century in Oklahoma, and it's an interesting piece of American history. One that I certainly don't remember encountering in school.

The web of dirt roads is spread out with intersections often miles apart. The area, not far from Oklahoma City, has quite a bit of farmland, some lakes, and enough trees in some spots to even deserve to be called forest, but based on what I can find out from local news sources it is being devastated by the current drought, and may well be threatened by wild fires spreading through the region.
