GREEN! (one)

Mt. Rainier National Park

The forests of Southern New England can be very lush and green in the summer. So can the mountains of West Virginia and the Blue Ridge. But I've never seen green like the forest near Mount Rainier as I drove through heading from Aurora, Washington, to Milton-Freewater, Oregon back on June 22.

And it's green like that year 'round to boot.

That's what I figured. The first thing that struck me about the forest of the Pacific Northwest was the preponderance of evergreen trees. On the East Coast there are plenty of evergreens, but plenty of broad leaf trees as well so the winter forest is much thinner than summer. There were hardly any broad leaf trees in the parts of the Northwest that I saw.
