PAY AT KIOSK

Waterbury, Connecticut

The decapitated parking meters looked odd. Vandalism at first glance, but by the corporate interests that sold the city on replacing old reliable with fancy electronic gadgets. I bet that buying or leasing the new system costs more than maintaining the old one, while making collection more efficient—meaning laying off some of the workers who used to maintain the mechanical meters and collect the coins. And the banks collect fees whenever anyone uses a credit/debit card at the Kiosk. Bank fees are highest for the smallest transactions. Win-win, for some.
